The first go-round for the combined Mutineers-Vikes team proved successful Sunday as the squad posted a 3-2 win over Rebels 1 in Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association competitive division play at UVic.
Thrown together to cover off player shortages for both sides for the final three games of the regular season, the team had the benefit of a few reserves to spell off teammates pushed all game by a spirited Rebels side on the day.
Vikes Finlay O’Callaghan and Grant Simpson scored once each in the win, while Mutineer Stuart Wylie added the other goal. Gavin O’Halloran, a factor on the attack all game, tallied twice for the Rebels.
In the opening game of the day, Hawks gained momentum in the second half with a couple of soft goals and rolled to an 8-1 recreational division win over Marauders. Gursharan Kalar and Amit Dillon scored a pair of goals each for the winners, while Gurcharn Athwal, Rajiv Dillon, Bobby Virk and Amar Bajwa added singles.
Kirn Khaira bagged the lone goal for Marauders.
The league continues its march toward the playoffs next Sunday (March 12), when Hawks take on Rebels 2 in rec play at 10:30 a.m., followed at noon by Tigers vs. Mutineers/Vikes.

With snow and chilly temperatures prompting UVic to close the main field hockey turf after an early Sunday morning check, all scheduled Feb. 26 Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association games are cancelled.
The next scheduled games happen March 5.

Anyone looking to give back to the sport of field hockey in the form of volunteering to help grow the game is asked to consider coaching in the 2023 Victoria junior spring league, which gets underway in early April.
Junior league technical director Ali Lee says efforts will be made to keep friends or teammates together in coaching assignments. That said, she notes it is more important to balance out the experience level of coach partners in each age group, and to maintain consistency across the programs.
“Coaches are expected to follow the same practice plans each week as their peers, so that on the field you will see all teams doing the same sessions,” she says.
There are certification requirements to get involved as a coach, including completion of online and in-person courses. Individuals may have already completed some of these, but here is a list of requirements for the various positions:
- Mandatory for all coaches/volunteers are all three Safe Sport courses, including Making Ethical Decisions (MED), SafeSport and Making Headway in Sport.-
- Head coaches must have completed the Coach Initiation in Sport and Field Hockey Canada’s Community Course-
- Assistant coaches need the Coach Initiation in Sport, while the FHC Community Course is optional.

Two in-person MED courses will be scheduled for late February and early March. The other courses can be completed online. Costs incurred for taking the Coach Initiation in Sports course will be reimbursed.

A pair of close games and one that was tightly contested at least for the first quarter highlighted Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association play Sunday.
The day started with a well-played recreational contest. Rebels 2, boosted by the addition of former longtime women’s national teamer Ali Lee in the backline, recovered from an early 1-0 deficit to down the Marauders 2-1 and take over top spot in the division.
Marauders (1-5-1) came in looking to tighten up the standings and tallied first on a nice setup finished off by Shawn Wuth in the opening half.
But the determined Rebels (4-2-1) kept their opponents’ offensive pushes mostly to the wings while skilfully pushing the ball through the middle of the field on counterattacks.
Their persistence paid off in the third quarter following a short corner when Lee, playing the ball just inside the 23-metre line, spotted a gap in the defensive coverage and calmly pushed a shot into the wide-open lower corner to make it 1-1.
The teams battled back and forth through the third quarter, but in the fourth, Rebels’ Bevan Van de Burg jumped on a loose ball in the D and beat keeper Kelvin Kum with a crisp shot.
The win allowed Rebels to inch past Hawks (3-1-2) into first place, with the latter on a bye week in the schedule.
In competitive division play, Tigers received offence from across the lineup in an 8-1 win over Rebels 1. The final score did not reflect the opening quarter, during which both teams enjoyed decent scoring chances but the only goal came from a Devin Virk tap-in for Tigers.
The still undefeated squad extended the lead to 4-0 by the half and rolled to an 11th victory of the season. Tigers had clinched first in the regular season with their win last week.
Josh Brown led the team with a pair of goals, while singles came from T.J. Parhar, John Sharp, Dylan Tucker, Ashley Fernandes and Shawn Kalar. Rec team callup Chris Dahl tallied for the Rebels.
The final game of the day saw Mutineers close the gap between third and fourth place with a 2-1 win over the shorthanded UVic Vikes.
Stuart Wylie and Dylan Roskin-Edrins scored for the winners, while Finley O’Callaghan notched the lone Vikes goal.
The league has this coming Sunday off for the Family Day weekend, and returns to action Feb. 26, with the rec teams playing their second-last jamboree of the season starting at 10:30 a.m., followed at noon by Tigers vs. Mutineers, and at 1:30 p.m. by Rebels vs. Vikes.

Hat tricks aren’t seen frequently in Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association play, but the Mutineers’ Gordie Johnston recorded the league’s second in two weeks on Sunday at UVic.
The national team member’s three-goal outburst carried Mutineers to a 4-2 victory over Rebels 1, marking the team’s second win of the new year. The men in green, who failed to score a point in the first half of the season, improved to 3-3-1 in 2023, but still sit five points back of the UVic Vikes for the season total in the competitive division.
Rec division callup Tom Vincent scored the insurance goal for the Mutineers in the fourth quarter, banging home a crossing pass into the D from Andrew MacKinnon.
Rohan Bandecha and Ethan Picard tallied for Rebels (6-6-1).
The Vikes continue to suffer from manpower shortages and on Sunday were forced to absorb a second straight forfeit loss, this time to the league-leading Tigers. The latter loaned some bodies to Vikes and the squads made good use of the turf time by playing a friendly match.
The day’s earlier recreational division contest saw a 3-3 split between Hawks and Rebels 2.
Scoring for the Hawks (3-1-2) were Amit Dillon, Devin Virk and Javier Virk, who notched a hat trick for Tigers the week before. Replying for the Rebels (3-2-1) were Simon Lightbody, Bevan Van de Burg and Tom Wilson.
Coming up next weekend (Feb. 12), the Marauders and Rebels 2 kick things off with a rec game at 10:30 a.m., followed by a pair of competitive division games; Tigers vs. Rebels 1 at noon and Vikes vs. Mutineers at 1:30 p.m.
